de Havilland C-7A Caribou on the airstrip at FSB Mace

de Havilland C-7A Caribou on the airstrip at FSB Mace

From Bien Hoa, I flew to Mace on the Caribou 20JAN1971. These cargo planes could land and take off on a dime but they were a very bumpy ride in the afternoon because of the unstable hot air. http://theaviationzone.com/factsheets/c7.asp

Mace was the Delta Company rear area at the time. I turned in all but one set of clothes and was issued "most" of the equipment I would need in the bush. This included an M-16 with a worn out barrel that wouldn't shoot true. It was months before I got a good rifle. My introduction to the reality of war-zone supply!
